Circuit Breaker Remanufacturing

At RESA Power, we don’t just rebuild Molded Case Breakers, we remanufacture them. All of our remanufactured circuit breakers conform to NETA and ANSI C37 specifications, and all tolerances are checked to meet or exceed the original manufacturer’s specifications. Here’s how we will remanufacture this Square D FHL26000M4200 for you:

Inspection and Initial Testing

We’ll start with an initial inspection and test of this Molded Case Breaker. We first want to check its mechanical and electrical operation. We’ll then perform a “Ductor” test, a “Megger” test, and several other tests to determine our starting point. (See “Testing Procedures” below for further description.)

During our initial testing, we’ll take note of any wiring, taping, or heat shrinking that shows any signs of deterioration. We’ll also note any springs showing signs of distortion, rust, brittleness, or improper compression. Noted items will be replaced later using equivalent or superior components.

Disassembly, Cleaning, and Replacement

All of our remanufactured circuit breakers are dismantled down to the last moving part:

  • Conductive parts are bead blasted as needed and cleaned using a vibratory cleaner.
  • Plated parts showing signs of peeling are replated or replaced.
  • Insulated parts and pole pieces are solvent cleaned to be free of silicone, oil, paint and moisture.
  • Frame parts and mechanism parts are aluminum oxide blasted and then repainted or replated.
  • All standard hardware is replaced with new hardware.
  • All pins are replated.
  • Roller and needle bearings are lubricated. (Nylon sleeve bearings do not require lubrication).
  • All springs are either replated or replaced.
  • Control wiring is cleaned or replaced as necessary.
  • Toggle switches, motor cut-off switches and relays are cleaned or replaced with identical or equivalent devices. Voltage and amperage ratings will always meet or exceed original specifications.

Reassembly and Final Testing

Now that the circuit breaker has been torn down with all of its components cleaned, refurbished or replaced, it’s time to put it all back together. RESA Power follows a meticulous quality control procedure during reassembly to ensure years of trouble-free operation. Breakers are reassembled to the original factory specification as follows:

Circuit Breaker Remanufacturing
  • Frame parts are reassembled and aligned.
  • Contact assemblies are adjusted to the manufacture's guidelines.
  • Current-carrying parts are reassembled and torqued to the manufacturer's or NETA standards.
  • New retainer pins or clips are carefully installed and checked.
  • Electrical devices and wiring harness are re-installed on the breaker and checked per factory or customer's wiring specifications.

Upon completion of reassembly, the now completely remanufactured circuit breaker is retested and certified by a quality control engineer. The rebuilt circuit breaker will be delivered to you with a Job Packet containing an Initial Inspection Report, a Quality Control Checklist, and a Final Test Report. These reports include all pertinent information to ensure that you are receiving a product of the highest quality.

Testing Procedures

"Ductor" Test

The Digital Low Resistance Ohmmeter (“Ductor”) uses dual spike probes to measure the resistance of the current carrying path of the entire phase. This test includes as much of the path as practical for each pole, ensuring that the entire pole (not just the contacts) has a low resistance.

“Megger” Test

The insulation of the circuit breaker is tested utilizing a 1000 volt megohmmeter (“Megger”). The breaker is tested in the closed position because of the additional stress placed on the insulators due to spring tension. The insulation is tested between phase-to-phase and phase-to-ground. With the breaker open, the breaker is tested from line-side to load-side of each pole, verifying insulation between the source and the load. The lowest reading of each phase is recorded. RESA Power maintains a standard requirement of a minimum of 500 megohms, ten times NETA minimum requirement.

High Current Primary Injection Test

The high current test is performed using a low voltage (usually less than 12 VAC) high current test set. Each phase or pole is tested for every trip function provided on the trip unit. The test is conducted in the following order to standardize results:

  • Long time (300% of pick-up current)
  • Short time (150% of pick-up current)
  • Ground time (150% of pick-up current)
  • Instantaneous1 (Determines the pick-up current)

1 Instantaneous is not a time test like the others. Therefore the test uses a short pulse of current and the short time functions are overridden or adjusted out of range of the instantaneous setting.

Control Circuitry Test

The control diagram of the circuit breaker is verified against your drawing or the manufacturer’s diagram. The circuit breaker is electrically operated using a variable power supply to check the pick-up voltage of the trip coil, under-voltage coil, and the closing coil. The maximum voltage limit of the close coil is also tested so it will still close and latch.
